TABS Data Dig: Range of Tuition & Aid Across TABS Member Schools

Richard PhelpsRichard Phelps, TABS Director of Research, has gathered a variety of data points from TABS member schools. This new series called TABS Data Dig will share relevant data and information regarding boarding schools; from dormitory size, tuition rates, to enrollment trends.

Because TABS member boarding schools are independent, they can offer consumers variety in the services they provide, at different prices. Most TABS member boarding schools allow students living nearby to attend as day students, at lower tuition. Some allow students living nearby or a little further away to board during the week (e.g., Monday through Friday) and return to their homes on weekends, at lower tuition.

Most TABS member schools offer financial aid to families who cannot otherwise afford to enroll their children. Whether that aid is labeled “need aid” or “merit aid” really depends on how each school wishes to label it; we do not impose precise definitions to clearly separate the two categories. Some argue that any students meeting the high academic requirements for entry to many TABS member schools merits financial aid, so any aid given should be considered only need-based.
